BACKGROUND

Stylized photo of sphere on Old Main lawnWith three new systems (LionPATH, WorkLion, SIMBA) replacing Penn State’s mainframe systems, which have been in place for decades, the mechanisms to extract and use data to gain insights struggled to keep pace.  These implementations are resulting in changes to how data is stored and managed at the source, and creating challenges to producing meaningful, reliable reports, especially longitudinal ones.

As a result of these changes, senior administrators launched a steering committee to discuss Penn State’s overall business and analytics capacity and capability in order to determine how to better leverage our data assets to inform decision-making at all levels of the University.

The Analytics & Business Intelligence Steering Committee, jointly chaired by Lance Kennedy-Phillips (Vice Provost for the Office of Planning and Assessment) and Michael Kubit (Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information officer), was commissioned in 2017 to address the future of analytics & business intelligence at Penn State.

The overall mission of the A&BI Steering Committee includes:

  • Engaging key stakeholders across the University to create a shared vision of A&BI at Penn State;
  • Developing an enterprise data management infrastructure to integrate data systems across the University;
  • Implementing a successful A&BI strategy;
  • Providing professionals the necessary tools and training to move the institution forward.
